XIII ENCOUNTER OF LATIN AMERICAN ANTARCTIC HISTORIATORS

On October 30, 2013, the XIII Meeting of Latin American Antarctic Historians concluded in the city of Ushuaia, Province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and the South Atlantic Islands, which took place at the facilities of the Ushuaia Maritime Museum, with concurrence of prestigious delegations of our country, Chile, Ecuador and Uruguay.-

The Academic Committee of the meeting was made up of members of the National Technological University of Tierra del Fuego, the Maritime Museum of Ushuaia and our Histarmar Foundation.-

The program ran between October 28 and 30, 2013, presenting thirty-one original works, four books and a documentary film. The presentations were seventeen from our country, eleven from Chile, two from Uruguay and one from Ecuador, in which the interest and seriousness of Latin American research regarding Antarctic history, in all its facets, was evidenced.

It is worth highlighting the organizational task carried out by the team of the Maritime Museum of Ushuaia and, especially, the work of its Director, our friend Lic. Carlos Pedro Vairo, who left no detail unattended, being present at all the meetings that were held.-

Likewise, during the XIII EHAL, two very interesting exhibitions, of great quality and excellently presented, took place, an artistic one, with the paintings made by Lic. Pablo Pereyra, museologist of the Naval Museum of the Nation, to illustrate the book of the CN Eugenio Luis Facchin, “Antarctica beyond sovereignty”; and another artistic-scientific with electronic microphotographs of diatoms made by Lic. Paulina Uribe Campos, a researcher at the University of Chile, made on specimens collected by her in Antarctic waters.-

Also presented at the meeting was the documentary video on the Falkland Islands, "The islands of the wind", made by Mr. Daniel Comito, from the National University of La Matanza, Argentina, which was screened at the venue.-

Something worth mentioning was the great spirit of camaraderie and friendship of all those present, which was evidenced during the magnificently well served lunches and intervals of the meeting, which were often continued with other meetings, such as dinners and Breakfasts at the hotel where we stayed with other participants.-

At the end of the meeting, a Secretariat was set up to organize the next meeting, for which Lic. Cristina Montalbán, from the Maritime Museum of Uruguay, and Mr. Cnel. Waldemar Fortes, from the Uruguayan Antarctic Institute; The city of Guayaquil, Ecuador, being proposed as the headquarters for the XIV EHAL, designation subject to confirmation by the authorities of that country, and, if it was not possible to do so there, the city of Montevideo, R.O.U., was proposed.

After the academic activity, the delegation of the Histarmar Foundation, made up of its President Carlos J. Mey and the Secretary, who writes this, was invited by the Commander of the Austral Naval Area, Clte. VGM D. Carlos E. Aguilera, to know the Ushuaia Naval Base and the patrol boats of his dependency, the visit taking place on October 31 in the morning, visiting, together with the attorneys Verónica Aldazabal and Pablo Pereyra, both from Naval Museum of the Nation, the ARA patrol boats "Indómita" and A.R.A. "Zurubí", being magnificently received by their respective commanders.-

That same day, the four named, we went to visit Puerto Almanza and Estancia Harberton, located on the Beagle Channel, where we had very good times.-

I do not want to close this story without stating that Lic. Vairo delivered, on behalf of the XIII EHAL, to the Histarmar Foundation an excellent commemorative medal of said meeting (highly praised by the BCRA professionals participating in the event), which was received by its president, Mr. Carlos J. Mey.-

Personally, I have no words to emphasize, now that I am recalling what happened in Ushuaia, the samples of cordiality and friendship that the attendees lavished on us, many of whom spoke highly of our page and some used photos and data from the same.-

A separate chapter is that of friend Carlos Pedro Vairo, who spared no effort to make us feel comfortable and well (fed) throughout the course of our visit to Ushuaia. Our deepest gratitude goes to him.

We have been invited to participate in the next meeting and to present a presentation on Antarctic history, for which we will have to start campaigning from now on

.- A big hug.-

HISTORY OF THE ENCOUNTERS OF LATIN AMERICAN ANTARCTIC HISTORIATORS
(Former Ibero-Americans), 1992-2013. The initiative to hold Meetings of Ibero-American Antarctic Historians (EHAI) emerged in 1990 in Buenos Aires during the first Meeting of Administrators of Latin American Antarctic Programs (RAPAL), with the purpose that the member countries of this body could take advantage of these meetings to also rescue , promote and put in historical and patrimonial value its scientific activities and presence in the Antarctic continent. In these eleven versions, its speakers have been worthy continuators of their conspicuous precursors in Antarctic studies: Ricardo Capdevila, Eugenio Genest, Oscar Pinochet de la Barra and Jorge Berguño. The I EHAI was held at the Esperanza Base, Argentina, in November 1992. On this occasion, the attendees agreed to create a Permanent Secretariat for future meetings, the responsibility of which fell on the person of the prominent Argentine Antarctic researcher, Ricardo Capdevila.
The II EHAI was organized in Lima, Peru, in July 1994, by the Institute of Maritime Historical Studies of Peru, with the collaboration of the Faculty of Human Sciences of the University of Lima. In October 1996, the III EHAI was organized by the Chilean Antarctic Institute (INACH) and was held at the Austral Antarctic Center of the University of Magallanes in Punta Arenas, Chile.
For the year 1998, the IV EHAI was convened in the city of Quito, Ecuador, but unfortunately, due to force majeure, it could not materialize. The following year, in October 1999, this meeting took place in Rio de Janeiro, at the Cultural Space of the Brazilian Navy.

The V EHAI was held at the Vice-Comodoro Marambio Antarctic Base and in the city of Ushuaia, Argentina, in October 2000, under the auspices of the National Antarctic Directorate - Argentine Antarctic Institute and the Argentine Air Force.
The VI EHAI was held in Punta Arenas, Chile, in September 2001, at the premises of the Chilean Antarctic Institute (INACH) and the Secretary - Coordinator of the XII RAPAL was the one who inaugurated the working sessions of the meeting of Antarctic historians. The VII EHAI in Montevideo, Uruguay, was held in the context of the XIV RAPAL in September 2003.
The VIII EHAI in Guayaquil, Ecuador, in September 2004, was held in the Finance Room of the Ramada Hotel, in which place also the XV RAPAL worked.
The IX EHAI in Lima, Peru, was held in the offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in September 2005 and in parallel with the activities of the XVI RAPAL.
The X EHAI in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in October 2008, in the premises of the ‘Palacio San Martín’. This was the last meeting that was held in parallel with RAPAL, on that occasion the XIX version, and the moderator or coordinator responsible for the meeting was the Argentine researcher Adolfo Quevedo Paiva.
The XI EHAI at the Air Force Club in Playa Hermosa, (Piriápolis, Maldonado) Uruguay, in November 2011. This meeting was possible thanks to the efforts of Ms. Cristina Montalbán (Naval Museum) and the support and organization of the Institute Uruguayan Antarctic (IAU), in conjunction with the Center for Naval and Maritime Historical Studies (CEHIS). In this latest version, the attendees unanimously agreed to modify the name of the meeting and replace the term Ibero-Americans with Latin Americans.
The XII EHAI was held at the hotel "Kon-Tiki", Balneario de Pichidangui, IV Region of Coquimbo, Chile, in October 2012. The organization was in charge of the Center for Hemispheric and Polar Studies and the Valle Hermoso Foundation. Ushuaia, April 30, 2013.
